23 Apr Leixlip United Boys Meet Man United Players on England Tour
Leixlip United are known as an emerging force in schoolboy football in Ireland, hailing from the North-East of Kildare region. DB Sports Tours were delighted to arrange their recent trip for three of their youth sides to England where they not only got to play some stellar matches, but also meet some top Premier League stars.
The boys trip, which consisted of two under-12 teams and one under-11 team, was over the weekend of April 15 – 17. Leaving at the crack of dawn on the Friday morning, the boys had an action-packed weekend ahead. As ever on our team trips a member of the DB Sports Tours staff was attended the trip, assuring all goes to plan.
Leaving by Dublin Port the group set off for Holyhead, Wales, before getting a coach to Manchester, where the real fun began. When in Manchester it was straight to the home of Manchester United, Old Trafford, aka the Theatre of Dreams. The group went on a stadium tour of the famous stadium, taking in all the history the famous nights the stadium has been witness to.
This would only be the start of their special team trip however. Following the stadium tour the boys had some famous visitors: Louis Van Gaal and the Manchester United squad. The group got to speak to the players and manager of the world famous club, which needless to say was one of the standout moments for the boy’s team trip.
Following the tour it had already been quite a long day given the travel involved, so it was time to check into their hotel, and have some well deserved dinner. After a good night’s rest the Saturday was laden with activities to make this team tour as memorable as possible.
Following another early start and breakfast at the hotel it was game time for this team tour; the three Leixlip United sides would take on local outfit Egerton FC at Mereheath Lane, Nutsford, Cheshire. Both under-12 sides won their matches, impressively, although the under-11’s were unlucky to lose a hard-fought matches.
The under-12 A team won 2-0, while the under 12 B side came out on top of a seven goal thriller winning 5-2. The aforementioned under-11 side meanwhile lost 3-0 in their matchup, but was said to be an experience they learned a great deal from.
Following the matches it was time to depart Egerton and head to the West Midlands, where they would take in some Premier League action in the form of West Bromwich Albion vs. Watford. Held at the Baggies’ ground The Hawthorns, the boys were witness to a slender 1-0 victory to the away side, who have impressively steered clear of relegation, following promotion to the top-flight this season.
After the game the boys had another memorable moment in store – while on a behind-the-scenes stadium tour of The Hawthorns, they got to meet two of West Brom’s leading strikers in Saido Berahino and Salomon Rondon. Rondon has previously played in the Champions League for Zenit St. Petersburg, while Rondon has been one of the Premier League’s rising forwards in recent seasons.
After this eventful day on the team tour it was inevitably back to the hotel for some much-needed rest. When they woke the next morning it was the final day of the team tour, but the work wasn’t over yet. Upon travelling to the Platt Lane Training Complex they underwent a training session. After the final training session the group departed for Hollyhead and subsequently across the Irish Sea and back home to Kildare.
Having met Louis van Gaal and his Manchester United superstars, meeting West Brom forwards, took tours of Old Trafford and The Hawthorns and took on Egerton FC the boys really had a great team tour.
