Adam McDonnell Offered New Deal at Ipswich Town

Having left Ireland for the world of professional football in England to sign for Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town, Adam McDonnell’s rise to prominence has been as steadfast as it has been impressive.

And it is that rise which has taken a further step recently, as Mick McCarthy confirming Ipswich Town will take up the option of extending his current deal. McDonnell signed for Ipswich Town last year, and has gone on two show massive progress since the move.

McDonnell started out at Home Farm (former schoolboy club of Liam Brady, Ian Harte and more), before moving to another famous Irish club, Shelbourne FC. McDonnell (18) signed for Ipswich Town in September 2014, joining their prestigious youth ranks, and has since made his senior debut for McCarthy’s charges.

McDonnell made his senior debut for the Blues last November, against Doncaster Rovers. This was no surprise however, having been involved in pre-season training with Ipswich the previous summer, featuring in friendlies against Fortuna Dusseldorf and former club Shelbourne FC. Earlier in the season he even got to mark former Barcelona midfielder Alex Song in an under-21 match.

McCarthy spoke this week about McDonnell’s contract situation: “There is an option, we’re offering him another contract, but we’ll take the option up, whatever”.

McDonnell’s impressive rise at club level has seen him capped for his country too. McDonnell impressed in the UEFA U19 Championships qualifying round in November 2014. He was previously capped at U15, U16 & U17 level for Ireland.

Following McDonnell making his senior debut last November DB Sports co-founder David Berber reminisced of his early memories watching McDonnell play: “When I saw Adam play for Ireland against Dundalk under-19’s I saw him as a player who could control and dictate the tempo of a game. That day he absolutely bossed it from start to finish.” on his progress this season “Adam has been exceptional this season, training with the first team on a regular basis, captaining the 21’s, traveling with the first team on numerous occasions, making the bench, he’s knocking on the door for the starting 11 and his time will come, he’s achieved so much this season and still only 18”
